'One Day At A Time' Ends After Four Seasons
It looks like the days have run out for the reimagined sitcom One Day At a Time. The show has been canceled once again on Pop TV, and its creators and producers have been unable to find a new network to take it on.
Variety reports that One Day At a Time co-creators Mike Royce and Gloria Calderon Kellett have both confirmed on their Twitter accounts that the show will not be getting a fifth season on any network and will now end.
In his statement, Royce said that while the show will now have to end, fans can always look to the four seasons that they can still look back on and watch. He also expressed his pride and appreciation for the cast and crew of the show.
Calderon Kellett also thanked the show’s cast and crew, as well as the fans that had vocally supported the show after its first cancellation on Netflix. She also reminded fans of the show that there will always be the past four seasons to watch forever.
Deadline outlines the circumstances that led to the final cancellation of the show, pointing out that Sony TV had little time to find a new home for the series as options for cast members Rita Moreno, Justina Machado, Stephen Tobolowsky, Todd Grinnell, Marcel Ruiz, and Izabella Gomez would only last until the end of the month.
With the cancellation, the series failed to have a satisfactory ending, as the fourth series on Pop only managed to shoot six episodes due to the global coronavirus pandemic. A seventh animated episode that tackled the presidential election was shot and aired on Pop.
During its run, One Day At a Time managed to win two Emmy Awards for multi-camera picture editing in 2019 and 2020, respectively. If the show had gone on to film the fifth season, Calderon Kellett said another episode of religion would have been shot, with Machado directing.
One Day At a Time is just one of the multiple shows that were canceled this year. Another high-profile cancellation was that of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The show was able to finish shooting Part Four of the series and would be streaming it this year.
The show’s final season will tackle the battle between the Eldritch Terrors and the Greendale coven. Sabrina will also have to decide if she can take back Nick Scratch at the end of the series.
Just like One Day At a Time, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina aired on streaming giant Netflix. Its first season had 11 episodes, while its second season had nine. The last two seasons of the show both have eight episodes.
