Co-parenting With Chris Martin Not As Easy As It Looks, Says Gwyneth Paltrow
Raising children as a married couple is difficult enough, and it must be doubly so for separated couples. In an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Gwyneth Paltrow shared some of the difficulties she has encountered co-parenting with ex-husband Chris Martin.
As E! Online recounts, Paltrow, says that she and Martin made a commitment to put their two children first when they divorced six years ago. However, she also admits that doing that is easier said than done.
Paltrow says that there are just days that you do not want to be around the person that you have divorced. However, she says that you have to get over that if you are really serious about committing to things like family dinners and building a new relationship outside of marriage.
People also reports that her relationship with Martin now is better than when they were married. The 47-year-old actress credits their therapist, who she says made them realize that any relationship is “50/50” when it comes to accountability.
Calling it “radical accountability,” Paltrow says she and Martin learned that both people in the relationship have to take responsibility for their own garbage and trauma. This enabled the two of them to learn and heal after their separation.
This message of a relationship requiring lots of work has been said previously by other celebrities, most recently by Elsa Pataky, Chris Hemsworth’s wife. According to the actress, her marriage to the Thor actor is “not perfect” and has had its share of ups and downs.
Pataky shared that having children so early into their marriage led to a rough patch in their relationship. However, she said that their strong personalities and the love they shared for each other helped them to weather the situation.
While Paltrow and Martin have found a way to make their post-divorce relationship an amicable one, other celebrities have not been as lucky. The most visible example is Amber Heard and Johnny Depp, who are both now locked in multiple legal disputes.
The couple’s divorce was finalized in 2017 and involved Heard getting a $7 million settlement from Depp. However, in a 2018 op-ed written by Heard has resulted in a defamation lawsuit from Depp that is asking for $50 million in damages.
The libel case, which was tried in the United Kingdom and is now set to deliver a judgment, was described by Heard as “incredibly painful” especially since it revealed intimate details about her relationship with the actor.
