Legendary Singer-Songwriter John Prine Succumbs To Coronavirus
Another entertainment industry legend has passed away due to complications brought about by the coronavirus. According to The Guardian, influential singer-songwriter John Prine is the latest to succumb to the disease.
Prine was first sent to the hospital on Mar. 26 after displaying coronavirus symptoms. His condition had stabilized on Mar. 30 after being intubated. His wife Fiona, who had also tested positive for COVID-19, had even made a recovery.
However, the 73-year-old Prine eventually succumbed to the illness after spending 13 days at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His wife, Fiona, said that he could not overcome the virus despite the best efforts of the medical team.
Prine was a very influential singer-songwriter, with a number of well-known names covering his work. Some of this names include Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, the Everly Brothers, Carly Simon, and Bette Midler, just to name a few.
Aside from writing songs covered and beloved by a multitude of artists, Prine was also a multiple Grammy Award winner. He was nominated 11 times and won twice. His album, “The Missing Year,” won Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1991, while “Fair & Square” won the same award in 2005. He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award just this year.
Prine’s colleagues mourned his death on social media, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Bonnie Raitt said Prine’s death left her “crushed.” She promised to continue singing his songs in the future.
Canadian musician Robbie Robertson said that “the world got a little darker,” while British singer-songwriter Cat Stevens sent prayers and love to Prine’s family and friends.
Carole King remarked that a great songwriter was lost, while former presidential candidate Al Gore said that Prine had a “unique way of illuminating the human condition.”
Prine’s death is the latest in a growing list of celebrities who have succumbed to COVID-19. British comedian Eddie Large also died because of the coronavirus, as did actor Mark Blum, dialect coach and actor Andrew Jack, and celebrity chef Floyd Cardoz.
Other celebrities who have tested positive for COVID-19 singer Placido Domingo, TV host Andy Cohen, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, and actors Olga Kurylenko, Rita Wilson, Ali Wentworth, Idris Elba, Tom Hanks, and Kristofer Hivju.
The Apr. 8 situation report released by the World Health Organization says that there are now 1,353,361 confirmed coronavirus cases. COVID-19 has now caused the deaths of 79,235 people.
There are now 395,011 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The number of coronavirus fatalities is now at 12,754.
