Coronavirus Complications Cause Death Of Broadway Star Mark Blum
Another member of the entertainment industry has succumbed to the coronavirus. According to BroadwayWorld, 69-year-old actor Mark Blum has passed away because of complications from COVID-19.
In the BroadwayWorld obituary, the site took note of his turn as Al in the 1988-1989 staging of “Gus and Al,” a play by Albert Innaurato. Blum was awarded an Obie Award for his performance.
Blum’s other stage credits include parts in “The Assembled Parties” by Richard Greenberg, “ The Best Man,” by Gore Vidal, and “Lost in Yonkers” by Neil Simon.
Aside from his work on the stage, Blum also performed on the big and small screen. Most people remember him fro the movie “Desperately Seeking Susan.” Released in 1985, “Desperately Seeking Susan” also starred Madonna and Rosanna Arquette. Blum also starred in 1983’s “Lovesick,” 1986’s “Just Between Friends” and “Crocodile Dundee,” 1987’s “Blind Date,” and 1988’s “The Presidio.”
Meanwhile, his television credits include roles in “Coin Heist,” “Capital News,” “Mozart in the Jungle,” “NYPD Blue,” and “Frasier.” He was a recurring cast member on the Netflix/Lifetime hit series, “You,” and also starred in HBO’s “Succession.”
CNN reports that many of Blum’s colleagues are mourning his death. New York’s off-Broadway theater Playwrights Horizon called Blum “a consummate artist” as well as a “dear longtime friend.” Blum was a regular player for the company.
Rebecca Damon expressed appreciation for Blum’s “clear perception” when it came to delicate matters, especially since the two of them both undertook important roles in the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). Damon is an executive vice president and New York president of the SAG-AFTRA labor union while Blum was a SAG-AFTRA board member.
Damon said Blum was always honest and did not hesitate to educate new SAG-AFTRA members about how the unions worked whenever provided with the opportunity to do so.
“Scrubs” star Zach Braff, meanwhile, called Blum’s acting “wonderful” and remarked that no one was kinder than Blum.
Former New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon, of “Sex and the City” fame, only had praise for Blum’s work, saying that it was equally “deep, subtle, hilarious.”
Blum now joins Floyd Cardoz and Terrence McNally as celebrities who have died because of complications from COVID-19.
There have also been several celebrities who tested positive for COVID-19. The list of names includes Andy Cohen, Placido Domingo, Aaron Tveit, Daniel Dae Kim, Olga Kurylenko, Idris Elba, Kristofer Hivju, Rita Wilson, and Tom Hanks.
