Netflix continues to bulk up its library as it becomes clearer and clearer that the global coronavirus pandemic will make streaming the preferred medium of entertainment in the immediate future. Its latest acquisition stars the Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The Hollywood Reporter says that the streaming giant has acquired the still-untitled series that will feature the former California governor in his first regular television role. He will be playing a spy that goes on international adventures. The series is created by Nick Santora, who is also working on Amazon’s Jack Reacher.
Schwarzenegger is an executive producer on the show alongside Skydance Television. As pointed out by the publication, this is not the first time Schwarzenegger has worked with Skydance, which produced Terminator Genisys and Terminator Dark Fate.
Variety reports that the actress Monica Barbaro is also starring alongside Schwarzenegger playing his daughter. Aside from this upcoming role, Barbaro is also part of the cast of the upcoming Top Gun sequel.
Barbaro also has television credits, with roles in Stumptown, Chicago P.D., UnREAL, Splitting Up Together, and The Good Cop.
Of course, Schwarzenegger is known for his role as the Terminator in the Terminator franchise, as well as movies like Eraser, True Lies, and Total Recall.
This untitled series is just the latest acquisition by Netflix. Back in September, the streaming giant announced at the Toronto International Film Festival that they had acquired the world rights to Malcolm and Marie, paying $30 million for the privilege.
Directed by Sam Levinson, the creator of HBO’s Euphoria, the film Malcolm and Marie tells the story of a filmmaker and his girlfriend whose relationship is tested after they come home from a movie premiere.
Another film that Netflix acquired at the Toronto International Film Festival is Halle Berry’s directorial debut, Bruised. The film is set in the world of mixed martial arts.
Netflix also announced back in July that they would be airing a scripted series focusing on the life of Colin Kaepernick. The series on the football player -- who was pushed into the limelight because of his activism -- will be titled Colin in Black and White and is executive produced by Ava DuVernay and Michael Starrbury.
All of these acquisitions will hopefully keep Netflix as the top-of-mind streaming service as the global coronavirus pandemic continues to rage all over the world. As of the Nov. 11 update of the World Health Organization, there are currently 51,251,715 confirmed COVID-19 cases globally. The number of people that have died from COVID-19 worldwide is now at 1,270,930.
