The “Great British Bake Off” isn’t a show where you expect bloodshed, so when Youtuber Joe Sugg cut his finer and ended up fainting because of the sight of his own blood, it got regular viewers of the Chanel 4 show talking.
As Yahoo! Sports reports, the 28-year-old vlogger was competing against singer James Blunt and television hosts Alison Hammond and Alex Jones for the Star Baker apron in the “Great British Bake Off” special, “The Great Stand Up To Cancer Bake Off.”
Sugg’s entry was a Signature Traybake with apples as one of the ingredients. However, he ended up cutting his finger while preparing the apples.
After mentioning that he’d “chopped” the top of his finger off, Sugg was approached by a medic but the Youtube fainted and collapsed on the floor before he could be inspected fully.
Once he recovered, Sugg was still worried about the state of his cake, asking if he had at least put it in the oven before he passed out.
Sugg was also approached by Hammond, who offered him something to eat to ensure that his blood sugar stayed up.
Sugg wasn’t the only contestant to injure themselves in the episode either. Express reports that TV host Alex Jones, Sugg’s competitor, also managed to injure herself seriously enough to require stitches.
According to Jone, she had incorrectly assembled the electronic mixer. Because of this mistake, she ended up cutting her hand on shattered glass.
She had initially insisted that she was fine, but it turns out she had a “massive” piece of glass embedded in her had. Paramedics had to stitch her up so she could continue baking. Jones even refused anesthesia before getting stitched, insisting that she had a “showstopper” to bake.
Despite the blood spilled, Sugg still went on to perform reasonably well on the show, even getting a handshake and compliment from the show’s judge, Paul Hollywood.
According to Hollywood, Sugg’s Traybake was “well thought through, well baked...pretty amazing.”
While this current season of the “Great British Bake Off” is still airing, it is unsure if there will be new episodes coming in the future. Like most productions, the show has had to stop filming because of the worsening coronavirus pandemic. According to one of the show’s spokespeople, new episodes of the show will only be filmed once “it is safe to do so.”
Other events that have been canceled or postponed because of the coronavirus include the Met Gala, BTS’s Map of the Soul tour, the Cannes Film Festival, Coachella, and the UEFA Champions League.
