Prince Harry Shares A Big Lesson From Meghan's Suicidal Feelings
Prince Harry has revealed that he learned a big lesson from his wife's experience after Meghan Markle told him of her suicidal feelings because she was struggling under the royal spotlight.
In a bonus episode on The Me You Can't See, Harry's new mental health series with Oprah Winfrey, the Duke of Sussex said that Markle's suicidal thoughts made him better equipped to handle people who say they would like to kill themselves.
Prince Harry explained that he wasn't sure how to react to Markle's confession in the beginning. He realized that so many people have been in his shoes as it can be quite uncomfortable to have such a conversation with a person who wants to end his or her life. The Duke of Sussex, however, said that he realized how much listening matters, adding that the ability to listen is the first step to healing, especially for someone who needs to be emotionally better.
Harry admitted he's now ashamed of how he reacted and handled Markle's revelations in January 2019. Because they were still working royals, Harry said that they didn't have the chance to process Markle's sadness. Instead, they went along and proceeded with their work as public figures as if "everything is okay."
Meanwhile, both Harry and Winfrey are throwing their support for initiatives that respond to mental health incidents, including abuse incidents, with "care" instead of using the armed police. The documentary producers said that such a system has been in place in Oregon for almost three decades, and it is known as the Crisis Assistance Helping Out on the Streets (CAHOOTS).
Harry and Winfrey are hoping that more cities will follow the CAHOOTS system, while the Duke of Sussex said that he loves how the organization has powerful programs that require little law enforcement help. He also said that the reason they did this mental health series was to show people that everyone is on a mental health spectrum, dealing with different types of issues, and needing different therapies.
An analysis from CNN stated that The Me You Can't See might have become a hit for AppleTV+ because the streaming platform saw a 25 percent increase in its subscriber sign-ups since the documentary's release on May 21. This apparently proves that Harry may have what it takes to produce TV shows. The Duke of Sussex has another TV project lined up, this time with Markle and Netflix, which will tackle the Invictus Games.
