Before Joe Biden announced Senator Kamala Hariss as his running mate ahead of the Nov. 3 election, Gretchen Whitmer was touted as one of those under serious consideration for the Democrat's running mate. While the 49-year-old Governor of Michigan says she would have accepted an offer to be the former vice president's running mate, she admitted that she glad that she wasn't picked.

After Biden vowed to pick a woman as his vice-presidential partner, Whitmer was one of the early favorites expected to join the Democratic ticket. Noting that this election was extremely important, Whitmer told a FOX affiliate in Detroit that is Biden would have called and asked her to be his partner and his running mate, she would have said yes.

When asked about Biden picking Harris as his running mate, she candidly said there might have been a sigh of relief at the governor’s husband and two daughters. Whitmer said everyone was happy with the outcome, per New York Post.

Whitmer, who is a co-chair of Biden’s campaign, revealed that the president-elect had contacted her at one point to consider a possible spot on the ticket. When he reached out to her to know her willingness to go through the vetting, Whitmer said he was shocked.

The Michigan pol has endorsed Biden’s selection of Harris and showed her support via a tweet. She noted that she was "extraordinarily proud" to support Harris and Biden, adding that they will be a fierce team that will build America back better.

The dean of Michigan politics and columnist Tim Skubick summarized that Whitmer did not get it at the end of the day but wasn't disappointed and was rather relieved. Skubick noted that it took Whitmer 15 months for her to admit that she would have said yes if Biden would have offered her to be his running mate.

Whitmer says she is currently looking forward to improving her relationship with the White House as soon as Biden takes office next month. A frequent Trump critic, Whitmer had faced criticism from the president, including when he referred to her as "that woman from Michigan."

Moreover, Whitmer is looking forward to receiving some assistance from the incoming administration in some critical initiatives in its first federal budget proposal. She said she is feeling very optimistic about how they are attacking and creating a national strategy that wasn't in place over the course of this year.
