George Clooney Reflects On Creating Music With Alexandre Desplat For 'The Midnight Sky'
George Clooney is well-known for giving his hundred percent when it comes to filmmaking. The 59-year-old actor recently revealed that he collaborated with the Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat for developing the background score for The Midnight Sky.
The 59-year-old French film composer has been nominated eleven times for The Queen to Little Women while he garnered Oscar for his work in The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Shape of Water. This is not the first time Clooney and Desplat collaborated on a project.
The multi-talented duo had worked on Suburbicon released in 2017, The Monuments Men in 2014, and Ides of March in 2011. The upcoming sci-fi movie is all set to premiere on Netflix on Dec. 23 and Clooney couldn't hold back his excitement while talking about the score.
The film is based on a book titled Good Morning Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton while Mark L. Smith has penned the dialogues. Clooney and Desplat opened up about the impact music made on this story. The actor noted that he worked with a little girl in this movie, Caoilinn Springall, who portrayed a mute girl's character.
Clooney explained when a character doesn't speak, it automatically takes out a lot of words from the performance and the only way to deliver a power pack act was with the help of a score in the background. The actor further admitted that his intention to create this movie was "meditation" and asked the musician to write down more music compared to other projects.
The actor further explained that music is one of the languages in the film as the characters are not going to communicate with the help of words. In fact, the actor said that music is one of the characters between the old man and the young girl.
"I thought this was an opportunity for us to do something where the music is a character a central character in the film, not just highlighting moments of sadness or terror but also carrying the emotion all the way through from the very beginning," he added.
Desplat agreed with Clooney and said that it was challenging for him as the music was supposed to be created not only for Earth but also for space. However, Clooney disclosed that they couldn't work together in person due to the ongoing pandemic, but they used to virtual medium to communicate.
