John Legend, Delroy Lindo, Tessa Thompson, And More Gets Honored By Critics Choice
The third annual Celebration Of Black Cinema has revealed the list of honorees by the Critics Choice Association. Mike Jackson and John Legend will be honored with Producers of the Year, while Delroy Lindo will receive the Career Achievement Award.
The Critics Choice Association disclosed on Dec. 8 that the event would celebrate many talents on Feb. 2. The Emmy award winner, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, will receive the Breakthrough Award, while Tessa Thompson will get honored by the Actors Award.
The cast of One Night In Miami, including Aldis Hodge, Eli Goree, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Leslie Odom Jr. by Amazon Studio, will take the Ensemble Award. The movie was directed by Regina King, who showcased four historical figures such as Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Sam Cooke, and Malcolm X.
Special Honoree will be given to Andra Day. The event is going to be held virtually next year, and television personality Bevy Smith will host it. The virtual ceremony will also highlight a bunch of powerful pictures captured based on the tragic incident of George Floyd by Tommy Oliver, who is a Black filmmaker and known for his work on Black Love and 40 Years A Prisoner.
The filmmaker and producer have used his platform during the Black Lives Matter protests. The event will also reflect on the Sciences’ Gold Program and Academy of Motion Picture Arts, along with an industry talent development, inclusion, and diversity initiative for supporting individual talents.
The evening will also focus on communities that are under-represented, lack resources and access to achieve success in filmmaking.
“The Critics Choice Association is thrilled to have the opportunity to recognize the work of these extraordinary artists in a year where the intersection of art and activism has never been more necessary,” Shawn Edwards, Executive Producer, said.
Edwards further said that each honoree had contributed greatness in 2020 to the Black cinema. Lindo is currently working on Da 5 Bloods by Spike Lee and also worked in Heist, The Cider House Rules, and three more movies by Lee such as Malcolm X, Crooklyn, and Clockers.
The 68-year-old actor will appear in The Harder They Fall, which will drop on Netflix. Jackson and Legend, along with Ty Stiklorius, have founded a company, Get Lifted Film. The company helped to produce projects such as Giving Voice, which is a Netflix original documentary, and Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, which is a Netflix original movie.
