Box Office Sees 'The Croods: A New Age' At The Top
Yet another film enjoys a second week atop the American box office, as the animated feature The Croods: A New Age keeps the crown. It is a small bright spot in an industry that has seen revenues decrease because of the global coronavirus pandemic.
Variety reports that the Dreamworks Animation and Universal collaboration ruled the American box office again with $4.4 million in ticket sales. It’s a sharp drop from the $14.2 million it earned during its first weekend, but still big enough to outperform other films out in theaters.
The next best performing film in America, Focus Features’ Half Brothers, did not even crack the million-dollar mark, clocking in with $720,000 in ticket sales. Meanwhile, the previous top film Freaky is now in third place with $460,000 in revenue.
Freaky, just like The Croods: A New Age, also spent two weeks atop the American box office. The horror-comedy stars Kathryn Newton and Vince Vaughn and had already managed to earn $4.8 million in ticket sales during its first two weekends.
The film also managed to accomplish this feat despite widespread theater closures in the United States due to the global coronavirus pandemic. During its second week in theaters, open theaters had shrunk to 2,800 from the previous 3,400.
Forbes adds that The Croods: A New Age has now also earned $60 million around the world. The publication says the animated film has earned $12.2 million in China, bringing its accumulated total to $36.6 million.
That The Croods: A New Age has already earned this much in just two weeks is a good sign for Dreamworks Animation, who had spent $65 million on the movie. Should the film continue to perform, it may turn a profit for the studio.
All My Life, a new release starring Harry Shum Jr. and Jessica Rothe, was fourth at the box office with a total take of $350,00. The War With Grandpa, which is already in its ninth week, brought in $329,000. It has now earned a total of $17.6 million.
Whether the box office will return to the blockbuster numbers it used to earn will be heavily dependent on the global coronavirus pandemic state. According to the Dec. 6 update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are now 14,462,527 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country. The number of people that have died from COVID-19 is now at 280,135.
Meanwhile, the Dec. 6 update from the World Health Organization's COVID-19 dashboard shows that there are now 65,870,030 confirmed COVID-19 cases globally. The number of people that have died from COVID-19 is now at 1,523,583.
