John Boyega Opens Up About His ‘Red, White and Blue’ And Fight Against Racism
John Boyega has been voicing against issues such portrayal of a Black person in Hollywood and racism in general across the country. The 28-year-old British-Nigerian actor opened up for the first time during George Floyd's tragic death, and he continues to do the same with his upcoming movie, Red, White, and Blue.
The actor previously attended an event where he revealed how much Black lives have mattered and been important to society. However, he noted during the event held in London that Black people have succeeded at every phase of life despite the hatred.
Boyega has been working on Star Wars and also starred in Pacific Rim: Uprising, which was also a sci-fi box office success. However, the actor came across an Oscar-winning filmmaker known for his work on 12 Years a Slave, Steve McQueen, and begin the most urgent, important, and necessary project, Red, White, and Blue.
The actor explained that he has a personal connection with the revenge-thriller film. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor revealed that he found the story interesting as he was born and brought up in the United Kingdom.
"To be able to play a man who is very important to our community and who has done especially so much for the young people. I’ve seen his work because growing up, I had friends who were mentored by him," he added.
Moreover, he appreciated the positive impact of Leroy Logan in London on various people while the actor admitted that embodying his character on-screen feels great. Boyega continued to explain that Logan was grown up in an extremely racist society and how he navigated his way is something that interested him in the subject.
The Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker star said that he was glad that McQueen came across after he wrapped up his franchise contract and was looking forward to the next project. However, he confessed that he loves to explore different types of projects and that's the reason why he chose to work in Detroit amid Star Wars IX and Star Wars VIII.
Boyega also noted that this is the reason why he is portrayed as a lawyer in Naked Singularity. The actor reflected on his meeting with Logan following his Hollywood journey. The actor said that meeting him was a brilliant conversation. They both spoke about their experiences in school programs and youth clubs, in which they have been actively participating.
