Mads Mikkelsen To Replace Johnny Depp On 'Fantastic Beasts'
Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen is jumping from one franchise to another. After starring as a villain in Doctor Strange, the actor will now be dealing with a different kind of magic as he joins the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
E! Online reports that the 55-year-old actor is set to replace Johnny Depp in the role of Gellert Grindelwald in the third Fantastic Beasts movie. Depp had earlier been removed from the franchise after he lost a libel case in the United Kingdom.
Mikkelsen will be joining Fantastic Beasts lead Eddie Redmayne at London’s Leavesden Studios, where the film is currently being shot. Other returning cast members include Jude Law, Ezra Miller, and Katherine Waterston, to name a few.
IndieWire recounts the sequence of events that led to Mikkelsen taking over the role. After the court ruling against Depp was handed down, it did not take long for Depp to take to his Instagram account to reveal that he had been asked to leave the film.
According to him, Warner Bros. had asked him to resign and that he “accepted and respected” the studio’s decision. The actor also expressed his gratitude to his fans, who he says has remained loyal to him.
Depp, who was only able to film one scene in the film before being asked to resign, will still be paid his salary in full due to the pay-or-play clause in his contract that requires him to be paid even if he is recast.
Once Depp was out of the picture, industry chatter immediately set up Mikkelsen to take on Grindelwald's role. Reports had said Mikkelsen was already in talks with the studio as early as two weeks ago.
Mikkelsen is not the only Marvel Cinematic Universe alum who is finding new roles. Just two weeks ago, Black Panther star Danai Gurira was cast as Shirley Chisholm, a groundbreaking presidential candidate who ran a historic campaign back in 1972.
Titled The Fighting Shirley Chisholm, Gurira will be joined by director Cherien Dabis and scriptwriter Adam Countee.
Like Mikkelsen, Thor star Chris Hemsworth is also joining another franchise outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hemsworth is part of the cast of the prequel film Furiosa, which will follow the character Imperator Furiosa before her time on the Mad Max: Fury Road movie.
Benedict Cumberbatch is also expected to reprise his role as Doctor Strange in the third Spider-Man film, where the Sorcerer Supreme is set to mentor Peter Parker. Cumberbatch will then go on to film the sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
