Lily James Opens Up About The Obsessive Character She Plays In 'Rebecca'
Lily James recently opened up about the character she plays in Rebecca and her experience filming Netflix's new psychological thriller with actor Armie Hammer. Aside from that, she also revealed how the story of the movie relates to today's modern world.
During an interview with ET's Nischelle Turner, James recalled that they were in the South of France, and it was so amazing that she felt like they were in heaven. To set the tone of the rest of the movie, they began to meet the characters, developed connections and relationships in an organic way, something the 31-year-old actress said was really important as it helps to establish a bond.
Netflix's new psychological thriller is based on Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel, Rebecca and it revolves around a young newlywed. Following their romance in Monte Carlo, Mrs. de Winter arrives at her husband's impressive family estate in Manderley. Soon after she arrives, Mrs. de Winter finds herself in the middle of a battle with the shadow of her late first wife, Rebecca.
"Yeah, I guess it doesn't go so well for my character," James jokingly told Turner. Nevertheless, the overall experience of meeting the man and their relationship helps the character find herself, James explained. Despite their twisted journey, James said, they love each other and even rescue each other in a very morally tricky setting.
James went on to reveal that playing this part was very interesting because of how easily the character she plays seems to be overcome by obsession and jealousy. She talks about jealousy as a negative emotion that feeds on itself and continues growing.
James noted that playing the character wasn't a very healthy headspace to be in, and on top of that, the filming experience was unsettling. She also spoke about how the film is relatable in today's modern time, as it reflects the digital world and social media that characterize the modern world.
She says her character has an idea of Rebecca, but the truth does not coincide with it., something she says is the case on social media as well. She explained saying that people tend to present themselves on social media while they are very different in reality.
The actress suggests it is all about "appearance versus reality," adding that they can be far apart. She says the new film tells a very modern tale in that respect. This interview comes shortly after James found herself in a romantic entanglement. She was spotted kissing Dominic West, her Pursuit of Love co-star, in Rome, Italy, on the weekend.
