Jada Pinkett Smith Says She Lied To Get The Role Of Niobe In 'The Matrix'
During an interview in 2015, Jada Pinkett opened up about auditioning for the role of Trinity in The Matrix, and what she thought about Carrie-Anne Moss landing the part. Talking about what she thought went wrong in the audition; the actress said she and Keanu Reeves didn't have good chemistry.
Pinkett Smith admitted that the audition didn't go well for her, in an interview on The Howard Stern Show. The 49-year-old actress spoke about how she lacked chemistry with Reeves, who plays Thomas A. Anderson, also known as Neo (The One, an anagram for Neo), but she didn't blame him for how the interview played out.
“I auditioned for Trinity with Keanu,” she told the show host, Stern, adding that she and Keanu didn't really click at that particular time. She went to reveal that she and Keanu ended up becoming really good friends. She did a screen test but realized that she lacked chemistry with good looking Canadian actor.
When Stern asked if Pinkett Smith thought Reeves was responsible for her not getting the role, the Gotham actress said she didn't blame him, and felt it wasn't anybody's fault. Although after the audition, she realized that she wasn't going to get the part, Pinkett Smith said she believed Carrie-Anne Moss was a great choice for the role.
Admitting that she wished she had been cast as Trinity, Pinkett Smith said felt Carrie-Anne was "freaking amazing," and that she might have not been able to deliver the same type of performance. While she did not get the role of Trinity, Pinkett Smith impressed the directors, the Wachowskis, who came up with the role of Niobe for her in the sequels.
Pinkett Smith was pregnant when she was offered the role, and in the interview, the actress confessed she told a bit of lie to ensure she gets the role. In a video for Vanity Fair, she spoke about how she got her role by telling a lie.
Discussing some of the details of her career, Pinkett Smith told the host that although she didn't get the role of Trinity, the directors kept her in mind and wrote a part for her called Niobe. They called her in and told her about the role of Niobe, but noting that she was pregnant.
The actress admitted that she had to fib to convince the directors that she is ready for the role. "And I’ll tell you a secret. I lied,” Pinkett Smith confessed in the video. While her daughter Willow was due Nov. 11, she told the directors that the baby will be coming in Oct. Much to her relief, Willow was born on Oct. 31, allowing her to start The Matrix by the end of Nov.
