Donald Trump Faces More Difficult Challenge In First Presidential Debate
Chris Wallace will serve as a moderator in the first presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Joe Biden on Tuesday. Fox News contributor Karl Rove suggests the president could be facing a harder challenge as compared to the Democratic presidential nominee during the impending debate.
Biden has a "pretty simple mission" for the first presidential debate against Trump, Rove told "Fox & Friends" on Wednesday. The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates on Tuesday unveiled the issues that the moderator of the first debate, "Fox News Sunday" anchor Chris Wallace, has picked as topics for the first 2020 general election debate.
Trump and the former vice president will take jabs at one another's records, the coronavirus pandemic, the Supreme Court, economy, nation-wide race and violence, and probably Trump's favorite topic, the integrity of the election. The candidates will be laying out their campaign's narrative, explain why Americans should vote for them, Rove said.
Rove went on to explain this would be particularly challenging for Trump because he not just has to explain what he has done so far, but also give sneak peek of what he plans to do if he gets reelected. Moreover, he needs to explain what his next move is, and make sure he contrasts his statements with his rival, Rove added.
For the sake of an instance, Rove said the president needs to say Americans know what he has done on the economy, before revealing his next steps to further strengthen the nation's economy. Aside from that, the president needs to point out all the bad things that are likely to destroy the nation's prosperity that Biden wants to do.
Biden, on the other hand, Rove said, has got a "pretty simple mission." If Trump mishandled the coronavirus response, and Rove said if he is a normal Democrat, there is no need to be afraid of him if someone's a Republican in the suburbs thinking about something aside from voting Republican.
Noting that will be a bit easier to do, Rove said we will need to wait and watch to see how he carries it off. With the race tightening nationally in polls, Rove thinks the Biden campaign should let him speak more off-script, reaching out to moderates if he plans to make up for any lost ground.
Speaking of the impending debate, Biden told reporters that although he has started to prepare, he hasn't gotten into it really heavily, claiming he will start to Thursday. The first debate between the GOP incumbent in the White House and Biden will take place on Tuesday, at Case Western University and the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
