Selena Gomez Messages Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg For Racism, Hate Concerns
Selena Gomez has been vocal about social issues and been an influential personality who uses her platform for sensitive topics without any hesitation. This time Gomez shared her opinion with the top board members of Facebook regarding hate speech and racism.
The 28-year-old singer and actress sent a private message to Sheryl Sandberg and Mark Zuckerberg who serve as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer, respectively. The Disney star counted there are over 77 million people liked her Facebook and over 193 million followers on Instagram, which is another social networking platform owned by Facebook.
The private message's screenshot was shared on the Instagram story as she called out the CEO and founder of the platform along with Sandberg who is responsible for various operations. The multi-talented star made a request to the authorities to initiate a conversation about hot button in order to get rid of hate speech and misinformation that cause conflict in the society.
"Facebook and Instagram are being used to spread hate, misinformation, racism, and bigotry. I am calling you both to HELP STOP THIS. Please shut down groups and users focused on spreading hate speech violence and misinformation. Our future depends on it," she wrote in the message.
The screenshot was out followed by other popular faces coming out to talk about the issue with a hashtag of #StopHateforProfit. Several stars blacked out on social media such as Dwyane Wade, Katy Perry, Mark Ruffalo, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kerry Washington, Jamie Foxx, and Kim Kardashian.
Although Gomez mentioned that elections will be held after 46 days and this is the curial time to get rid of any misinformation circulating in respect of voting. She noted that there should be accountability and fact-checking and concluded that she is hoping to get a reply from the authorities of Facebook as soon as possible.
Chris Gardner, an American businessman posted the screenshot on Twitter as breaking news. Apart from Gardner, many celebs took Twitter to outrage such as Chelsea Handler who wrote that Facebook continues spreading false information.
The 45-year-old comedian also noted that Facebook is allowing political parties to push ads for their campaign, which is a complete lie. She further asked to remove all false information regarding voting and restrict posts that influence violence of any kind. However, Gomez’s private message to the top-level authorities seemed likely to receive a reply, and fans and followers of the stars feel it will turn out positive.
