There have been several reports doing rounds on how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are looking for their financial independence within 2021. An old article has exposed that another royal “rebel” had left the United Kingdom but always aspired to return to Britain with a job.

The Duke and the Duchess of Sussex had originally proposed to divide their time between North America and the United Kingdom while declaring their independence. However, when they had detailed discussions with Queen Elizabeth II, it became obvious that they would be spending a major chunk of their time in the United States.

Initially, many royal followers felt that Prince Harry and his wife would settle in Canada. However, the couple quickly shifted to California, Markle’s former home state just before the Canadian borders were shut. Some observers even compared Harry’s decision to step down from his royal duties with that of King Edward VIII who had also left the country in a hurry.

He had abdicated the throne in 1936 just before his coronation to get married to Mrs. Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American lady. There was so much unrest after Edward left the country that his brother King George VI compelled him to stay in France. A publication even said that Mrs. Simpson and Edward “were exiled.”

Elise Taylor, a writer felt that the couple was not allowed to return to England without King George VI’s permission for apprehensions that such a move might cause massive public outrage and turmoil.

The government had warned to suspend his payments as decided in the financial settlement if he tried to come back to the country, Vogue reports. When the Second World War started, Edward was appointed as a major-general in France.

There were some whispers about him being sympathetic towards the Nazi that made the Government and Buckingham Palace extremely worried. As such, the Duke of Windsor was made the governor of the Bahamas so that he could be far off from the Western front.

However, the Duke was not happy with this arrangement and referred to the Bahamas as a “third-class British colony” while writing a letter to the King in 1945. After the Second World War ended, the Duke made a brief and rare visit to England and revealed some intriguing tidbits in an interview given to the Manchester Guardian, Express reports.

When the reporter asked him whether he would like a job in England, Edward allegedly said: yes to that. At that time, many reports emerged on the possibility of his return to England after he met Winston Churchill, then Prime Minister of England.

Although the former monarch showed his desire to return to England, Taylor wrote that nothing materialized. However, the circumstances surrounding King Edward VII was completely different from that of Prince Harry. While Edward abdicated the throne altogether, Harry opted for simply stepping down from royal duties.
