Reese Witherspoon In Hot Seat After Draper James Disaster
It was a plan made with good intentions. But due to lack of planning, it became a disaster waiting to happen, and now it seems that actress Reese Witherspoon is paying the price.
Page Six reports that it all started on April 2 when fashion brand Draper James announced a giveaway for teachers in light of the coronavirus pandemic which has shut down schools not just in the country but all over the world. It was a good plan. The brand wanted to give appreciation to the teachers. They announced that they were going to give away a dress for them.
But then their plan backfired. After posting about the giveaway on their social media account, the company failed to give further instructions about the said giveaway. They did not indicate that not everyone would be getting the dress. Out of the 1 million teachers who participated, only 250 were actually able to receive a dress. The rest were given codes for discounts on their store.
This confusion led to many taking to air out their frustrations on the Draper James Instagram account and in their own personal social media accounts. The Daily Mail reports that many of the teachers felt that they were misled by the brand, and one even said that the company actually capitalized on the pandemic.
Draper James was established by Reese Witherspoon in 2015, and the name was derived from the names of Witherspoon's grandparents. While the brand has a wide range of clothing, accessories and home decor, it cannot be considered a big company. There are reportedly only 30 persons working in Draper James. The number of applications they got for the giveaway was more than five times the number of dresses that they were actually able to sell last year.
Reese has not responded to the online flak that the brand is receiving due to the mishap. But there are reports that she has donated to an organization that supports teachers.
While Reese's efforts hat have backfired, many other celebrities have been successful in their efforts to bring joy in this season. Many artists have participated in concerts for a cause. Singers like Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga and more have banded together to raise funds for the benefit of the frontline health workers who are battling the coronavirus pandemic.
As of today, there are already more than 2 million positive cases all over the world and more than 134,00 deaths.
