Netflix Orders Action-Adventure 'Troll' From Tomb Raider Director Roar Uthaug
Netflix’s action-adventure catalog is pretty power-packed with movies such as Spider-Man: Homecoming, Ben Affleck-starrer Triple Frontier, and the sixth installment of Tom Cruise’s MI series Mission Impossible - Fallout. Action movies produced under the banner of Netflix have also hogged a great proportion of entire Netflix viewership.
A potential great addition is on the way. The streaming platform has greenlit a Norwegian monster movie titled Troll from the direction of classics Tomb Raider and The Wave, Roar Uthaug.
The feature is set to debut sometime in 2022 - and seems poised to become one of Netflix’s hot products, considering the background of the story.
Inspired by the Scandinavian legend, Troll circles around a gigantic creature who rises from within the Scandinavian mountains after being trapped for a thousand years. As he rises, he rampages his way to the Norwegian capital of Oslo, destroying everything that stands in his path – and city dwellers are entirely taken aback as they thought the monster existed only in the folklores.
Although Hollywood isn’t a stranger to such ideas, it may be close to a fresh offering due to its source of inspiration.
The feature will be produced by the production company behind the Norwegian Netflix film Cadaver, and Motion Blur’s Kristian Strand Sinkerud and Espen Horn.
About the streaming platform’s collaboration with Uthaug, the VP of International Original Film at Netflix, David Kosse said, “We are incredibly proud to bring a Norwegian project of this scale to the world together with Roar Uthaug and Motion Blur. Roar is an extremely skilled filmmaker and I’m excited for him to go back to his Norwegian roots with this ambitious, fun film. We are thrilled to bring ‘Troll’ to life, a Norwegian fairy tale figure, played, directed and produced by Norwegians for the global market.”
Besides Kosse, Uthaug has revealed some great details about the project. The industry vet said that Troll is an idea that has been in the back of his head for the past “20 years.” In addition, he also added that it’s like a “dream come true” to be teaming up with Motion Blur and Netflix for a project of this scale which is so close to his heart.
The contributors are enthusiastic about the project and so are fans who, by any means, have experienced the intensity of Uthaug’s projects. Uthaug is the mastermind behind Amundsen, The 12th Man, and the series The Oil Fund. More details are expected to be around as the production starts.
