Barack Obama Deems Donald Trump As A Threat To Democracy
Former President Barack Obama warned American people that the country's democracy is in jeopardy in the upcoming election, touting Donald Trump as categorically unfit for the job. Aside from slamming the president, Obama urged the people to vote for his former vice president Joe Biden.
Obama went on to urged the people of America to trust their own ability, embrace their own responsibility as citizens, and to ensure that the basic principle of the country's democracy endures. He was addressing Americans from the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, where he was surrounded by the text of the U.S. Constitution.
"Because that’s what's at stake right now. Our democracy," Obama said during his Wednesday's speech using its symbolic backdrop to starkly reference the upcoming election. He warned against carelessness, stating that cynicism and apathy responding to Trump's attacks on democratic norms would destroy the entire system until there's no democracy left.
Obama pointed out that the Trump administration would go as far as tearing the country's democracy down if that's what it takes for them to win. He urged the people to put in their efforts into the days ahead of the 2020 US election, and vote like never before for Biden and his running mate Harris and other candidates up and down the ticket, linking this action to showing what America stands for now, and for days to come, The Hill reported.
These remarks can be touted as Obama's most direct attacks against his successor, and a noteworthy rebuke by a former president of a sitting president. He has taken jabs at the president from time to time, but for a major portion remained out of the public eye except for when he hit the road during the 2018 midterms.
He criticized Trump's character, his treatment o protesters, his attacks on the free press as well as his lack of commitment to the job. Noting that he initially thought Trump would take the job seriously and that he would find some respect for the democracy that has been placed in his care, Obama echoed points that other speakers at the convention have pointed out as well.
Obama is capable of providing a boost to Biden’s campaign that probably no other Democratic Party member is capable of. His affection for Biden, who he called "a brother" was noteworthy in the speech.
