Nancy Pelosi Calls Members Back To Capitol Hill From August Recess To Consider USPS Legislation
Donald Trump has recently left no stone unturned in an attempt to criticize mail-in ballots, baselessly claiming it will lead to massive voter fraud. While his remarks have widely received a backlash, it looks like it has raised concerns about the method, which experts claim is the best way to vote amid the pandemic.
Keeping in line with that, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said members could be called back from recess from the month of Aug. to address concerns surrounding the integrity of the U.S. Postal Service. She also urged Democrats to turn up at their local post offices amid the battle to protect mail-in ballots for the impending election.
Pelosi pointed out that the post office has become Election Central due to the still-raging coronavirus pandemic, despite the president and Republicans warning for months that universal mail-in ballots would lead to widespread voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election. In a letter to colleagues, she wrote that the effect of Trump campaign's attempts to sabotage the election by exploiting the Postal Service to keep voters under the thumb.
She called Postmaster General Louis DeJoy a "top Trump mega-donor," and accused him of pushing forward new operational changes demean postal service, delay the mail, and echoed the Postal Service accusation of threatening to deny the ability of eligible voters to cast their votes via the mail in the Nov. elections on time.
She went on to say that the delays jeopardize the health and economic security of the American by failing to deliver payments and life-saving medicines on time. Pelosi noted that lives, livelihoods, and the life of American Democracy have come under serious threat from the president.
She attributed her decision to call upon the House to return to session and vote on Oversight and Reform Committee Chairwoman Maloney’s ‘Delivering for America Act to the aforesaid issues triggered by Trump's attempt to obstruct the post office's operation. The act restricts the Postal Service from changing operations or the level of service it had in Jan. 2020, Fox News reported.
Moreover, in a bid to save the Postal Service, she advised members to participate in a Day of Action on Tuesday by attending a press event at a Post Office in their districts. She noted that during the pandemic, the Postal Service is Election Central and the people should not have to choose between their health and their vote.
