Comedian Mo Gilligan Makes Great British Bake Off Debut
Comedian Mo Gilligan’s “Great British Bake Off” debut had a number of hiccups, but the 32-year-old managed to pull it off in the end.
As pointed out by The Voice, the comedian himself wasn’t confident about his chances in the kitchen. Gilligan admitted being able to cook but not being able to bake, calling himself someone who is still learning. He even admitted to almost burning his mother’s kitchen down.
Milligan’s thoughts about his performance seemed to become a self-fulfilling prophecy as he ended up making a huge mistake on the show.
In the Radio Times recap of the episode, the site mentions how Gilligan had to bake another cake from scratch -- with just one hour left before time would run out.
The mistake was forgetting to use the nine eggs required by his cake recipe. He had only used two, resulting in a cake that sagged in the middle and would look nothing like the sneakers he had planned it to resemble.
Gilligan decided to start over, which was a risky decision to make as his competitors -- host Carol Vorderman, TV judge Rob Rinder, and television personality Kelly Brook -- were already designing their cakes,
Rather than coming up with a cake that looked like sneakers as he originally planned, what Gilligan ended up with was a log with fragments on top to represent laces.
Nevertheless, Gilligan was still able to win over the judges, with Paul Hollywood calling the cake “delicious.”
Gilligan’s egg mishap isn’t the only incident to happen in this celebrity edition of the “Great British Bake Off.”
In a previous episode, YouTuber Joe Sugg fainted after he cut his finger while preparing apples for his Signature Traybake. Sugg was attended to by medics and also offered food by a fellow competitor, television host Alison Hammond.
In that same episode, Sugg’s competitor, Alex Jones, also had to be attended to by medics. The television host had incorrectly assembled an electronic mixer, resulting in her getting a cut that would require stitches from the paramedics.
While this current season of the “Great British Bake Off” continues to air on Channel 4, it is still unclear if there will be new episodes coming after this. The coronavirus pandemic has made a number of productions stop filming, with “Great British Bake Off” being one of them.
According to The Guardian, the United Kingdom currently has 55,242 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The number of deaths is at 6,159 people.
