The production of Grey's Anatomy drama is into season 17. Fans are excited to learn how the series is going to unroll creatively. Giacomo Gianniotti who plays lead character on the show spoke with Katie Krause about the upcoming season.

The 31-year-old Italian actor revealed that the storyline of the fresh season will revolve around the ongoing pandemic. The actor explained that there will be a leap when the season kick-starts and the show won’t resume where it was ended in last season.

"We're going to start the season about a month and a half [into] full COVID, so it's going to take place a little beyond where we left off in the last season. We might have some flashbacks. We might have some things where we're referencing last season, just to have context leading up," Gianniotti said.

The long jump will happen following the season 16 would have served as a finale. The season ended when Andrew DeLuca's character portrayed by Gianniotti suffering from the bipolar incident after diagnosing the condition of Richard Webber's character portrayed by James Pickens Jr.

Webber was eventually taken home by Meredith Grey played by Ellen Pompeo. It will be interesting to watch DeLuca's character dealing with people amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the new brand season. However, Gianniotti said that according to him chief residents might perform better compared to other seasons.

The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe star explained that the situation is going to be absolutely stressful but exciting at the same time. As per Gianniotti, the next season might start shooting from September onwards. Although actors are cautioned about the safety measures issued by the officials.

The actor disclosed that the initial plan was to start shooting at the end of August but later the creators decided to push forward the dates. However, no official announcement has been made regarding the date. Gianniotti explained how the new normal is going to look like for the Grey's Anatomy series.

The producers of the series are constantly trying to ensure that all the safety protocols are implemented during the shooting so that actors or anyone on the set doesn't contract with the virus.

There are going to be separate zones built for the people working on the series and of course, everyone is going to be tested several times on a daily basis. Gianniotti confirmed that most of the people on the sets are going to wear PPE.
