Hunter Biden Faces Potential Indictment Over Gun Charges
In a recent development, Hunter Biden, the eldest son of President Joe Biden, is on the brink of facing legal consequences. A court filing on September 6 disclosed that federal prosecutors are gearing up to indict him for illegal possession of a firearm as a drug user by the end of the month.
Hunter Biden, a father of four, is anticipated to be charged on two felony counts stemming from his 2018 gun purchase. At that time, he had openly acknowledged his use of crack cocaine. This looming indictment follows a disrupted plea deal in late July, where Hunter was set to admit to two misdemeanor charges of "willful failure to pay federal income tax." This would have potentially allowed him to sidestep jail time related to the gun charges. However, the arrangement unraveled at the eleventh hour, leading Hunter to enter a not guilty plea in a Delaware court.
The presiding judge emphasized that investigations into Hunter's alleged wrongdoings are ongoing, and he might face additional charges in the future. A comprehensive 32-page letter accompanied by 300 emails from Hunter's legal counsel, Chris Clark, provided insights into the reasons behind the collapsed plea deal. The documents suggest that U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika might have had reservations about the agreement due to concerns about Hunter's other possible offenses. These include potential involvement in foreign business dealings by both him and his father.
Clark, in his communications, highlighted the potential reputational risks for the Department of Justice (DOJ) in pursuing this case, especially given the prevailing political climate. He stated, "This of all cases justifies neither the spectacle of a sitting President testifying at a criminal trial nor the potential for a resulting Constitutional crisis."
While Judge Noreika dismissed the misdemeanor charges against Hunter on August 17, the forthcoming indictment could see him back in court soon. The case continues to draw significant attention, with many awaiting further developments in the saga of the President's son.
