King Charles III to Forgo Prince Harry's London Court Appearance for Romanian Getaway
King Charles III has chosen to embark on a holiday retreat in Romania, coinciding with Prince Harry's court appearance in London next week.
The Duke of Sussex will be present at London's High Court to present his case against Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) concerning alleged phone hacking. Concurrently, the newly anointed King will enjoy a respite from his royal obligations and recent coronation festivities with a tranquil hiking getaway in Transylvania. His accommodation will be a simple, rustic farmhouse nestled in the quaint village of Zalanpatak, near the breathtaking Carpathian Mountains.
The monarch's stay, estimated to last five days, will be spent without the company of his wife, Queen Camilla. The scenic retreat, devoid of modern technology such as wifi, radio, or TV as reported by the Independent, offers a modest "hi-fi player with CDs" for entertainment.
Far from a bachelor pad, the retreat boasts three heritage cottages with seven double rooms, all furnished with authentic Transylvanian antiques and textiles and each providing en-suite bathrooms. The farmhouse has been repurposed as a guesthouse for intrepid travellers, offering all-inclusive stays starting from £140 per night.
The King is reported to sleep in a "little wooden bed" while at the property. According to royal commentator Jennie Bond, the 74-year-old King "loves it there" and has even implemented an "ecological" water treatment system at the residence. The idyllic setting, home to wolves and bears, is surrounded by the rolling hills and verdant meadows of the Zalan Valley.
The King owns at least ten properties in Romania, the first of which is a Saxon house in the village of Viscri, acquired in 2006. As for Prince Harry's accommodation while in London, it remains uncertain. Following a request by King Charles III for Harry and Meghan Markle to relinquish their residence at Frogmore Cottage, Windsor, Harry has returned to London alone, leaving his wife and children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in California.
It's also ambiguous whether the monarch had any interaction with his youngest son prior to the Westminster Abbey coronation. The Duke of Sussex didn't linger after the ceremony, catching an early flight back to California to celebrate his son's fourth birthday on May 6.
In a previous visit to London in March, Prince Harry attended a preliminary hearing for his privacy suit against Associated Newspapers Limited, publisher of the Daily Mail. He was in the city for four days but did not meet his father due to scheduling constraints. During this period, the King was away at Highgrove, his country estate, and had pre-scheduled royal engagements overseas.
Prince Harry's return to the U.K. follows an unsettling incident involving paparazzi in New York on May 16. He, Meghan Markle, and Doria Ragland reported a distressing car chase with paparazzi after attending the Women of Vision Awards in Manhattan. This event, according to royal author Omid Scobie, evokes memories of Princess Diana's fatal accident and, notably, did not provoke any outreach from royal family members, including King Charles III and Prince William.
