Patty Jenkins Opens Up About 'Wonder Woman 3' And The Amazon Spin Off
There is no denying that 2020 hasn't been good years for cinema-goers so far as theaters across the globe have been kept shut down to restrict the spread of coronavirus. Along with a slew of much-awaited movies, Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman's release date was also postponed but it looks like DC Extended Universe fans finally have something to cheer about.
Gal Gadot and film director Patty Jenkins will be teaming up again for Wonder Woman 1984, which takes place over 60 years after its predecessor. As if that weren't enough, recently surfaced reports suggest WW84 is only the second installment of four Jenkins plans to offer to the mammoth fanbase of the superhero.
The noteworthy gap between Wonder Women and its sequel WW84 allows Jenkins and Gadot to explore an entirely new side o the superhero. The exuberance and appeal of the 1980s lie in the striking contrast to the somber despair of World War I.
Much to the fans' delight, Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor, who dies in the first film makes a reappearance in the picture. In Wonder Woman 1984, Diana will go toe-to-toe with Barbara Minerva / Cheetah (played by Kristen Wiig). In the comics, Cheetah is touted as one of Diana's greatest nemesis.
Jenkins has already suggested that the upcoming film will be completely different from the previous movie. Short footage of the film coincides with her claims, but it remains to be seen how it plays into the director's long term plans for Wonder Woman going forward.
After her brief involvement with Marvel Studios on Thor: The Dark World, Jenkins noted that DC doesn't need to follow in the footsteps of Marvel, meaning, it can consider adopting a whole new style. According to Showbiz CheatSheet, this mindset has come in handy for developing Wonder Woman and her realm without worrying about its connection to everything else.
It is highly likely that it is because of that focus, Jenkins is planning for four installments of the Wonder Woman tale. The first film which was released in 2017, and the 2020 sequel has helped Jenkins reach halfway there, but she still has a continuing storyline that she wants to complete. It is not what a lot of fans would normally expect.
In an interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar), Jenkins admitted that she is not going to come up with a new thought about it until this movie is released because she wants to give herself a palette cleanser and ensure she is fresh of mind. Regrettably, the acclaimed director remained mum about additional details about what fans can expect from the Amazon spin-off or Wonder Wonder 3.
