NewJeans Shatters Guinness Record as Quickest K-Pop Act to Reach 1 Billion Spotify Streams
NewJeans, a South Korean girl group, continues to make history, achieving 1 billion streams on Spotify in record time, less than a year since their debut. The group, comprised of Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein, reached this milestone in just 219 days, according to the Guinness World Records.
Having debuted in July 2022 under Ador, an independent entertainment label affiliated with Hybe, NewJeans currently boasts six songs on Spotify: "Attention," "Hurt," "Hype Boy," "Cookie," "Zero," "Ditto," and "OMG." By March, their most-streamed tracks, "OMG" and "Ditto," had amassed a combined total of at least 625.6 million plays, with "OMG" topping the list with over 320 million streams.
NewJeans broke the previous record held by Blackpink's Lisa, who achieved the same feat in 411 days in October 2022, and BTS member Jungkook, who set the solo artist record at 409 days on March 27.
Following their debut, NewJeans quickly gained international recognition with their innovative concept inspired by Y2K fashion and denim, energetic music, and distinctive choreography. The group is scheduled to perform at Lollapalooza this summer, making them the first female K-pop group to appear at the renowned music festival. The event will take place in Chicago's Grant Park from August 3 to 6.
NewJeans will share the stage with South Korean boy group Tomorrow x Together (TXT), who will headline the festival, as well as other South Korean performers such as Dpr Ian, Dpr Live, and indie-rock band The Rose.
In anticipation of a summer comeback, Ador CEO Min Hee Jin confirmed to Billboard in early April that NewJeans had recently completed recording for a new album, adding that the group "will continue to strive to present something new and unique to exceed the expectations of their fans" in an effort to challenge mainstream industry stereotypes.
Reports initially suggested that a pre-release track from NewJeans would be released in June, followed by a new album in July. However, Ador refuted these claims, stating that the official schedule had not yet been determined.
"NewJeans' comeback schedule has not been decided. Later on, when it is decided, we will make an announcement," Ador said in a statement, as reported by Soompi. "Nothing has been set in stone."
