Trump Leads Biden in 2024 Presidential Race Poll Amid Concerns Over Biden's Health
As the 2024 presidential race begins to take shape, a recent poll suggests that former President Donald Trump might have an edge over President Joe Biden in the upcoming election.
An ABC News/Washington Post poll released on Sunday, May 7, indicates that 80-year-old Biden could lose to 76-year-old Trump in the next election, with the president trailing by seven points in a hypothetical 2024 matchup. When survey participants were asked if they would "definitely" or "probably" vote for Trump or Biden or opt for someone else or not vote at all, Trump led Biden 36-32 after the first question.
The poll also revealed that among those "probably" voting, Trump holds a seven-point lead over Biden.
One reason for voters leaning towards Trump appears to be concerns about Biden's mental and physical health. The poll shows that more than six in 10 Americans believe Biden is not capable of serving another term as president. Only 32 percent of respondents feel that Biden possesses the mental sharpness required for effective leadership in the White House, while 54 percent believe Trump has the necessary mental acuity.
Regarding physical health, 33 percent of respondents say Biden is in good enough shape for the job, compared to 64 percent who believe the same about Trump.
However, some respondents feel that both men, who are close in age, may be too old to serve as president. According to the poll, 26 percent believe Biden is too old, while 1 percent say the same about Trump.
ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos commented on the poll results, stating, “This poll is just brutal for President Biden!”
Despite Trump's arrest and arraignment in April, the poll found that approximately 20 percent of respondents think Trump should face criminal charges in New York for allegedly paying hush money to Stormy Daniels in relation to their purported affair.
