Shakira Addresses Alleged Infidelity by Gerard Pique at Billboard's "Women in Latin Music Awards"
Colombian pop sensation Shakira did not hold back as she addressed her former partner Gerard Pique's alleged infidelity during her acceptance speech at the Billboard "Women in Latin Music Awards" on Saturday.
Honored as Billboard's "Woman of the Year," Shakira took the stage at Miami's Watsco Center, where she has returned to live after being evicted from the home she shared with Pique near Barcelona. The couple's tumultuous relationship has been heavily documented in the media over the past year.
Following their separation announcement last summer, Pique went public with his new girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti, just a few weeks later. Although he never admitted to cheating on Shakira, evidence suggests that he and Chia knew each other years prior to the split, as Chia worked at his company, Kosmos Holding.
Shakira has alluded to the alleged infidelity in her music, and her recent speech further confirmed her feelings. She stated, "It doesn't matter so much if someone is faithful or not, what really matters is if you continue to be faithful to yourself." She also highlighted the importance of self-acceptance and authenticity over seeking perfection to please others.
Discussing her personal struggles over the past year, Shakira remarked, "It is a year in which I have realized that women are much stronger than we think. We are braver than we think we are. I think we are also more independent than we were taught to be," as reported by Marca.
She admitted to having "forgotten about herself" while seeking attention, approval, and affection, but found solace in her music. Shakira said, "It's true that when I felt most lost, it was music that put me on the path back to myself." Following her separation from Pique, she released singles "Te Felicito" and "Music Sessions #53," both of which contain pointed messages aimed at Pique and Chia.
In an emotional statement, Shakira added, "I wrote what I wrote and sang what I sang because only a woman can love until she tears herself apart." Her words were met with a standing ovation and enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Shakira and Pique first met in 2010 when she performed the FIFA World Cup anthem in South Africa, where Pique's Spanish team ultimately claimed the title. The couple never married but had two children together during their nearly 12-year relationship. After their split in 2022, Shakira fought to take their children back to Miami, eventually securing visitation rights for Pique. The relocation took place last month after Pique's father issued Shakira an eviction notice.
