Kennedy Family Faces New Challenge: Lesbian Granddaughter Plans IVF Baby
The traditional Catholic values of the Kennedy family are being put to the test as Rose Schlossberg, President John F. Kennedy's lesbian granddaughter, plans to have a child through in vitro fertilization with her spouse, according to insiders.
Rose, a 34-year-old Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis look-alike, is the daughter of Caroline Kennedy. She stirred up controversy within the family last year when she married 32-year-old gay restaurateur Rory McAuliffe in California. Now, sources say the couple has decided to take the next step by undergoing IVF.
"Rose and Rory are on the lookout for the perfect guy to serve as sperm donor," reveals an insider.
Caroline Kennedy, the 65-year-old U.S. ambassador to Australia, is said to be delighted at the prospect of becoming a grandmother for the second time. However, not all family members share her enthusiasm. An insider notes, "Many of them are torn because they are devout Catholics." Several relatives, including family matriarch Ethel Kennedy, reportedly refused to attend Rose's wedding.
Now, family tensions are rising over the prospect of a child being raised in a same-sex marriage. Despite this, Rose and Rory are eager to expand their family and continue the Kennedy legacy.
"Their hope is to have a baby boy, which the couple would name John after both Rose's late uncle, John F. Kennedy Jr., and grandfather," says the insider. "Still, some of her stuffier relatives remain uncomfortable with her family dynamic."
