The world will turn its attention to London on May 6 as King Charles and Queen Camilla are crowned in a ceremony blending tradition with modern elements. "Most of us won't have seen a coronation happen in our lifetime," says British journalist and royal commentator Jonathan Sacerdoti, who anticipates over 300 million viewers and extensive social media coverage.

As the royal procession makes its way to and from Westminster Abbey, where coronations have occurred since 1066, the streets of London will be filled with spectators. Sacerdoti notes that the ceremony's in-person attendance will be significantly smaller than Queen Elizabeth II's, with only 2,000 guests compared to 8,000 in 1953. Among the attendees will be Prince Harry, arriving from California without his family.

Prince William, next in line for the throne, will have a distinctive role during the coronation. Traditionally, royal dukes would kneel to "pay homage" before touching the crown and kissing the monarch's right cheek. However, at Charles' ceremony, William will be the sole participant in this ritual.

Nine-year-old Prince George will also make history as the youngest future monarch to take part in a coronation ceremony. He will serve as a Page of Honour, responsible for carrying the royal couple's robes during the procession to and from Westminster Abbey. "We're all very excited about Prince George's role in the coronation. It will be an incredibly special moment," a Kensington Palace representative shares. Other Pages of Honour will include Camilla's grandsons and great-nephew.

The May 6 event not only formalizes Charles' role as head of the Church of England but also marks a shift toward a modern monarchy. The ceremony, expected to be shorter than Elizabeth's, will be rich with symbolism. Charles may even permit the anointment by the Archbishop of Canterbury to be televised for the first time.

Following the placement of St. Edward's crown on Charles' head, he will vow to defend the faith while holding the sovereign's sceptre and rod. Sacerdoti points out that modern cameras will capture far more detail during this event. Camilla will be crowned alongside Charles, shedding her title of queen consort and officially becoming queen.

King Charles III, the oldest monarch to ascend the throne at 74, represents a new era for the royal family. A long-time environmental advocate, supporter of over 400 charitable organizations, and more outspoken about global issues than his mother, Charles aims to leave a lasting impact. "I find myself born into this particular position. I'm determined to make the most of it," he says. "I hope to leave things behind a little better than I found them."
