Rising LA Rapper MoneySign Suede Fatally Stabbed in California Prison
MoneySign Suede, a promising rapper, died on Tuesday at the age of 22 after being stabbed in a California prison. Jaime Brugada Valdez, the rapper's real name, was found in the shower area of the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad, California, according to AP News, citing a statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
While the department did not provide additional information about his injuries, MoneySign Suede's lawyer, Nicholas Rosenberg, informed the Los Angeles Times that the rapper was believed to have been stabbed in the neck.
An anonymous prisoner disclosed that Valdez was discovered in a section of the prison that houses general population inmates, which is considered "unusual" because rappers are typically placed in the sensitive-needs yard – an area designated for individuals with specific security concerns or public profiles. It is unclear under which profile MoneySign Suede was classified, as his career was still in its early stages.
Authorities at the facility informed TMZ Hip Hop that they are currently investigating the case as a homicide. According to unnamed sources, the "Rewind" rapper was found unresponsive in another part of the prison and immediately taken to the medical facility, where emergency aid was provided. Despite attempts to save him, he was pronounced dead around 10 p.m.
TMZ reported that the rapper's death prompted officials to restrict prisoner movement during the ongoing investigation, conducted in collaboration with the Monterey County District Attorney's Office and the Monterey County Coroner, which will determine the official cause of death.
Several of MoneySign Suede's fellow rappers paid tribute to him on Instagram following his tragic passing. Fenix Flexin, the "Apologies" rapper, wrote, "I f—king love [you] bro. Life's not fair, I'm beyond broken, get [your] rest," while Baby Stone Gorillas stated, "Rest up, bro."
MoneySign Suede signed with Atlantic Records in 2021 and released his most recent album, "Parkside Baby," under the label in 2022. Some of his most popular songs include "Back To The Bag," which has amassed 7.1 million views on YouTube, "No Love," "She Gon Choose," "Whole Time," "Juice," and "Pistol Packin."
In December, the rapper was sentenced to two years and eight months in Monterey County prison, which houses around 4,000 minimum and medium-security inmates. He faced two charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
