Autopsy Reveals Aaron Carter's Cause of Death; Ex-Fiancé Questions Findings
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office has determined Aaron Carter's cause of death to be drowning in a bathtub, resulting from gas and drug effects. The pop star had difluoroethane, a gas commonly used as a propellant in electronic gadget air spray cleaners, and alprazolam, an anxiety medication, in his system.
The 34-year-old Aaron Carter was found unconscious in a bathtub filled with water at his home on November 5 and was declared dead at the scene. Difluoroethane is known to cause "cardiotoxic effects, which can result in cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac arrest." Alprazolam, on the other hand, has "depressant effects on the central nervous system, which can cause drowsiness and sedation."
The medical examiner ruled Carter's death as accidental, stating that "Mr. Carter became incapacitated in the bathtub due to the combined effects of inhaling compressed gas and ingesting alprazolam."
Carter's autopsy was conducted the day after his death, but the results were delayed due to the need for toxicology tests. Aaron Carter, the younger brother of Backstreet Boys' Nick Carter, had opened for Britney Spears and his brother's group. He also starred in the family's reality show "House of Carters," which aired on E! Entertainment Television.
Celebrities such as Hilary Duff, Melissa Joan Hart, and Tyler Hilton expressed condolences following Carter's death. Nick Carter shared a tribute, saying, "My heart is shattered. Despite my tumultuous relationship with my brother, my love for him never waned."
Melanie Martin, Aaron Carter's ex-fiancé and mother of his child, told TMZ, "The autopsy results are not closure for me. It says death is by drowning but also mentions he was wearing a t-shirt and necklace in the bathtub, which doesn't make sense; why would he be in a bathtub with clothes on?"
Carter was known for several singles in the early 2000s, including 'I Want Candy' and 'That's How I Beat Shaq.' He toured with the Backstreet Boys and appeared in various films and TV shows. He had been open about his struggles with substance abuse and mental health.
Aaron Carter's son, Prince, was born in November 2021 to him and Melanie Martin. Carter had entered a month-long outpatient rehab program after losing custody of his child.
