Actor Joshua Jackson, who has been married for over three years, recently shared his unconventional opinion that extramarital affairs should not necessarily lead to the end of a relationship.

"I think an affair can be forgiven," Jackson, who married Jodie Turner-Smith in late 2019, told the Sunday Times in an interview published on Sunday.

The 44-year-old actor elaborated, "We're all grownups. No one wants to be cheated on and there is massive repair to be done." The former "Dawson's Creek" star went on to say that affairs aren't solely about the partner or the sexual aspect but rather involve a deeper violation that many may not comprehend.

Jackson has appeared in two productions that examine infidelity: Showtime's "The Affair" and the television adaptation of "Fatal Attraction," which is set to premiere on Paramount Plus on April 30. The 1987 film, starring Michael Douglas and Glenn Close, tells the story of a married man whose affair comes back to haunt him and his family.

Before marrying Turner-Smith, 36, Jackson was in a ten-year relationship with actress Diane Kruger. The couple split in 2016 amid rumors that Jackson was not interested in marriage or having children.

The Canadian actor, now a father to a 3-year-old daughter with Turner-Smith, shared with the Sunday Times that his change of heart about settling down was partly due to his age. "I'm old enough to be able to do this," he said, adding that the decision also hinged on "finding somebody in the right moment of life."

Jackson further explained, "If [Turner-Smith and I] had met five years earlier, we probably would have had a torrid affair. But all the rest of this stuff, I was just not ready. I didn't think I ever wanted to get married."

The couple met through a mutual friend in 2018 and initially maintained that their relationship was casual. However, Jackson confessed that they would "spend every moment together and find reasons to be in other cities together at the same time."

In July 2021, Turner-Smith revealed that she was the one who initially proposed, but it was later disclosed that the "Fringe" actor also got down on one knee.

The couple welcomed their daughter Janie in April 2020, less than a year after their wedding. Jackson gushed, "Now, we have this beautiful baby who is literally the manifestation of that love."

He added, "It is impossible for me to look into the face of my child without feeling love for my wife. [Fatherhood] has changed me in every single possible way."
