Armie Hammer Faces Investigation by LA District Attorney Over Sexual Assault Allegations
The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office is examining sexual assault allegations against actor Armie Hammer, following an accusation of rape made by an ex-girlfriend. Tiffiny Blacknell, a DA representative, confirmed to CNN that the LAPD had presented a case involving Hammer, which is now under review. She did not disclose who filed the complaint. The Post has attempted to contact Hammer's attorney, Andrew Brettler, for comment.
Although the specifics of the allegations remain unclear, Effie Angelova, the 26-year-old former girlfriend of the "Social Network" star, accused Hammer in 2021 of "violently" raping her and subjecting her to "mental, emotional, and sexual" abuse in 2017. Hammer, 36, has denied any criminal misconduct and has not been charged in the case.
At the time, Hammer, through an attorney, stated that all interactions with Angelova during their four-year relationship, as well as with other partners, were "completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participatory." Hammer has also been accused by some women of having cannibalistic fetishes and BDFSM fantasies.
Recently, the beleaguered actor revealed that he considered suicide amid the backlash. Hammer, who was residing in the Cayman Islands during the media scrutiny in February 2021, told Air Mail, "I just walked out into the ocean and swam out as far as I could and hoped that either I drowned, or was hit by a boat, or eaten by a shark." However, he abandoned the idea, considering the impact on his children, Harper, 8, and Ford, 6, whom he shares with ex Elizabeth Chambers.
Hammer acknowledged the power imbalance in his relationships with younger women, such as Courtney Vucekovich and Paige Lorenze. He admitted to being emotionally abusive towards his former partners, saying, "I'm here to own my mistakes, take accountability for the fact that I was an a–hole, that I was selfish, that I used people to make me feel better, and when I was done, moved on."
Hammer attributed his behavior to trauma resulting from alleged sexual abuse by a youth pastor when he was 13 years old. Since the allegations of sexual abuse and inappropriate behavior emerged, Hammer has maintained a low profile. He was dropped by his personal publicist and former agency, WME, and lost multiple projects. His wife of ten years, Chambers, filed for divorce before the scandal broke.
Angelova characterized Hammer as "manipulative" and accused him of seeking public sympathy with his suicide story. She stated that his alleged abusive behavior had impacted not only her but also her family, after claiming that the actor "repeatedly slammed her head against a wall." Hammer described his lifestyle as "very intense and extreme" to Air Mail.
