Joanne Woodward's Final Days: Oscar-Winning Actress Receives Hospice Care Amid Alzheimer's Battle
Legendary actress Joanne Woodward's 16-year struggle with Alzheimer's disease is reaching its end, as family friends inform The National ENQUIRER that the 93-year-old is in her final days.
A close friend reports that Paul Newman's widow, who received a Best Actress Oscar for 1957's The Three Faces of Eve, is now under at-home hospice care.
Woodward is said to be surrounded by her daughters with Newman—Nell, 64, Melissa, 61, and Claire, 57—along with Paul's daughters Susan, 70, and Stephanie, 69, from his first marriage to Jackie Witte.
"At this point, the best that can be done for Joanne is to keep her comfortable while waiting for the inevitable," the friend shares. "It's a tribute to her courage and determination she has lived with this debilitating disease as long as she has."
Woodward's passing will bring a silver lining, as her estimated $50 million estate will be divided among the daughters to support their preferred charitable causes.
When Paul Newman passed away in 2008, half of his fortune was given to Newman's Own Foundation and other charities, with the remainder going to Joanne. However, the Newman's Own Foundation has faced controversy. Susan and Nell filed a lawsuit against the foundation last year after the board of directors reduced the amount of charitable funds Paul's children could distribute from $400,000 to $200,000 per year.
"Paul's daughters were blessed with their father's passion for making the world a better place," says the friend. "With Joanne's passing, there will be plenty of money to fund their individual passion projects."
