Meghan Markle Recalls Getting ‘Help’ At ‘Worst Point’ In New Podcast Episode
Meghan Markle shared details about her mental health journey in the new episode of her “Archetypes” podcast. She even recalled how she got “help” at the “worst point” of her life during the engagement.
The Duchess of Sussex welcomed Constance Wu, Jenny Slate, and Deepika Padukone for the material. She and her guests discussed the word “crazy” and matters relating to mental health in the episode titled “The Decoding of Crazy,” which dropped on Tuesday.
While speaking to the Bollywood celebrity, the former working royal revealed the moment she “finally connected” to a mental health professional, who Prince Harry had found for her to call.
People, in its report covering the exchange, quoted Meghan Markle, sharing, “I think at my worst point, being finally connected to someone that, you know, my husband had found a referral for me to call. And I called this woman.”
It continues, “She didn't know I was even calling her. And she was checking out at the grocery store. I could hear the little beep, beep, and I was like, ‘Hi,’ and I'm introducing myself and that you can literally you're going, wait, sorry. I'm just. Who is this? Um, and saying I need help. And she could hear the dire state that I was in.”
The Duchess of Sussex later noted, though, that she thinks “it’s for all of us to be really honest about what it is that you need and to not be afraid to make peace with that,... and ask for it.”
Earlier in the episode, Meghan Markle asked her guests to raise their hands if they have ever been referred to as “crazy or hysterical, or… nuts, insane, out of your mind, completely irrational,” according to Fox News.
After noting that she has experienced it, as well, the Duchess of Sussex is said to have shared that she feels “pretty strongly” about the word and label “crazy.” She stated that the same goes for how “it’s thrown around so casually and the damage it’s wrought on society and women” everywhere.
Reportedly emotionally, the former working royal continued that “it also has this silencing effect” as she referred to the “stigma surrounding the word.”
She is also stated to have asserted that the effect on “women experiencing real mental health issues” is that “they get scared,” adding that “they stay quiet, they internalize, and they repress for far too long.”
The new material is the fifth to the 12-episode podcast series. It is also the second one since “Archetypes” resumed from its hiatus following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.
Last week, Meghan Markle engaged with Lisa Ling and Margaret Cho for the episode "The Demystification of Dragon Lady," wherein they tackled the “archetypes that try to limit and define Asian women.”
