Rapper Doja Cat Apologizes For Her 'Racist' Song That Surfaced Online
Doja Cat, 24 is now apologizing for making a racial slur in her song. It was an unreleased track, but the lyrics still surfaced, causing a huge backlash.
An unreleased track by Doja Cat entitled “Dindu Nuffin” appeared online and spread like wildfire, not because of how good the music is, but because it contains racial undertones. The title itself is already quite a controversial term since it is associated as a mockery to those who are victims of police brutality. Irate Twitter users made the hashtag #DojaCatisOverParty trend over Twitter to signify how this song made them want to cancel her out.
The rapper, who was born Amalaratna Zandle Dlamini, finally reacted to the backlash on her Instagram. According to her, she had no way used that term to be racist. In fact, she used it the other way around, to reveal her own experiences of being hurt. However, she recognized the fact that her trying to flip the meaning of the term failed and put her in a bad light.
"I want to address what’s been happening on Twitter,” she started her post, which she shared on Sunday, May 25. “As for the song that surfaced, it was in no way tied to anything outside of my own personal experience,” she added. She explained that post was her reaction to those who actually used the word to hurt her. She tried to “flip” the meaning, but she realized it was a bad decision after all.
According to Doja, she is a black woman, being the daughter of a South African artist - an actor, a composer, and even a producer in one. She is the daughter of none other than Dumisani Dlamini, and this means that she would not be racist to her own community.
Doja explained that her family is half black, and she is proud of that. She is happy about where she came from, and she is also well aware of how careful she hs to be given her level of influence. She then expresses her love for her fans, and apologies not for an act she allegedly did not commit, but for upsetting or hurting any of her fans, not deliberately.
Recently, after the song circulated, people accused her of being racist in various internet chatrooms when she was younger. Doja clarified these rumors too, saying that even though she’s on public chat rooms at an age when she should not have been, she never participated in any racist conversations while in those chatrooms. Still, she said sorry o everyone she has somehow offended.
