Will Smith To Lose His First Oscar Win Following Chris Rock Altercation?
Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage after making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith at the Oscars 2022. This has seemingly led many to wonder whether he could lose his first-ever Oscar win.
New York Post said that the actor "may be asked to hand back" his gong for the Best Actor category. The assertions have come from industry insiders who spoke about the matter with the publication.
They reportedly explained that what happened was "basically assault." It was, also, emphasized that the series of events earlier that night "shocked" everyone in the room, adding that "it was so uncomfortable."
The sources continued that Smith would not likely want to give his Oscar back. But, even so, no one knows what will happen.
The Academy, later on, released an announcement, which the publication deemed “cryptic,” on its official social media accounts. It says that “the Academy does not condone violence of any form.”
The post, then, states that they are “delighted to celebrate” the winners of the 94th Academy Awards, “who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.”
No further statements have been said, however, about the altercation, involving Will Smith and Chris Rock. Nevertheless, the outlet shared that it had already reached out to the Academy for comment.
Diario AS released a similar report, as well, regarding the matter. It pointed out that the Academy has yet to provide any official comment regarding its next “course of action.”
But, in discussing whether Will Smith could lose his Best Actor gong, the outlet turned to the Academy’s code of ethics for guidance. It emphasized that to do so, it needs to go back to the organization’s stance against misconduct following the “industry sex abuse scandal” in 2017.
There is reportedly “no rule in place,” making it possible for an award to be stripped away from the recipient. It did recall, though, that Harvey Weinstein and other sexual predators have been stripped of their membership in the Academy.
Amid the speculations about Will Smith’s win, the Los Angeles Police Department has confirmed that Chris Rock has “declined to file a police report,” according to Variety.
As per the statement to the publication, LAPD is “aware” of the incident that took place during the Oscars. While no report has been filed, “LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report” if the “involved party” decides to file at a later date.
