Prince William and Prince Harry grew up close to each other. But their relationship changed in recent years reportedly because of their respective wives, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.
In the documentary The Princes and the Press, a former private investigator named Gavin Burrows claimed that the press told him that Prince Harry was more popular than Prince William that’s why they preferred to have him on the cover of tabloids.
At the time, Prince Harry was also dubbed as the new Princess Diana because of all his questionable antics. Prince William, on the other hand, was the more serious of the two and he seldom made mistakes that put him on the cover of tabloids.
Burrows also admitted that he was responsible for hacking into Prince Harry’s ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy’s phone to get information about the Duke of Sussex.
“There was a lot of voicemail hacking going on, there was a lot of surveillance work on her phones, on her comms. Chelsy would brag to her friends when she was going to see him,” Burrow said.
After several years, it was only in the documentary that Burrows gathered up the courage to apologize to Davy and Prince Harry. He also admitted that he was greedy to get all the information that he needed to continue living his grand life.
“I was basically part of a group of people who robbed him [Harry] of his normal teenage years,” he said.
Following the release of The Princes and the Press, the royal family released a statement saying that they are disappointed with the BBC for airing the first part of the documentary.
“A free, responsible, and open press is of vital importance to a healthy democracy. However, too often it is overblown and unfounded claims from unnamed sources that are presented as facts and it is disappointing when anyone, including the BBC, gives them credibility,” they said via Cosmopolitan.
Shortly after, the BBC released a statement in response to the palace’s claims.
The network said that the documentary was about how royal journalism is done and it also features a range of journalists from broadcast and the newspaper industry.
The second part of The Princes and the Press will air on BBC on Nov. 29. And the final scenes will feature interviews regarding the past three years where Markle was already part of the royal family.
