Queen Elizabeth promised to serve The Crown during her coronation decades ago. At the time, the monarch said that she will perform her duties with loyalty to The Crown until the day she dies.
But despite the queen’s firm words, some royal experts are still convinced that Her Majesty will soon abdicate.
Years ago, rumors claimed that the queen will abdicate when she’s 95 years old. But two years ago, a statement from Clarence House denied the claims.
“There are no plans for any change in arrangements at the age of 95 – or any other age,” the statement confirmed via USA Today.
But following the queen’s recent hospitalization, YOU magazine claimed that the monarch had a secret conversation with her cousin, Margaret Rhodes.
She allegedly told Rhodes that she will abdicate if she gets diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or suffers a stroke. After all, the two conditions will prevent her from serving The Crown.
But if not for these reasons, the queen won’t just abdicate. And even if Prince Charles has been waiting for decades to be crowned king, he has to keep on waiting until after his mom passes away.
According to royal expert Angela Levin, Prince Charles knows that the queen won’t leave the throne early unless she feels that her mind is no longer as sharp as it once was.
“This is what she promised in her early twenties when she became the monarch and she’s very religious. She asked God to help her and I don’t think she’ll want to cross that path. But I also imagine she’s got a lot of common sense and if she becomes ill or feels that her mind is not working sharply as it still is, she might do something,” Levin said.
Meanwhile, British doctor Isabella Kent told Hello! magazine that royal fans shouldn’t underestimate the queen. After all, she may be old in age, but she’s not necessarily frail.
When looking at an elderly person’s capacity to perform their duties, one should take into account their resilience and physical or mental reserve.
As of late, the palace’s stand about the queen not abdicating no matter what has not changed. So, even if she was hospitalized recently, it’s unlikely for her to pass on the throne to her eldest son.
Prince Charles and Prince William have been given more duties following the queen’s hospitalization, but they won’t be king anytime soon.
