It looks like streaming giant Netflix has yet another success on its hands. The company says that its newest series Bridgerton, produced by Shondaland, is expected to have reached tens of millions of households in less than a month.
Variety reports that 63 million households have, reportedly, watched the new historical drama Bridgerton since it premiered on Netflix on Christmas. The number is enough to make it the fifth-largest Netflix original series launch of all time.
Outside of the United States, Variety quotes Netflix as saying that Bridgerton made it to the top of the Netflix top 10 in 76 other countries. The series is also enjoying critical acclaim, as review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes currently has it at a 92 percent “Fresh” rating.
Deadline adds that Bridgerton’s success follows Netflix’s recent announcement of the George Clooney film The Midnight Sky reaching 72 million households in a month. The outlet also revealed some of the other successful shows and movies that Netflix had over the holidays.
We Can Be Heroes, a spin-off of the children’s film The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, also drew in huge numbers in the space of a month. Netflix says it was watched in 44 million households and was on top of the kids' overall list in 88 countries.
These successes might soon have a follow-up as Netflix has been aggressively acquiring and producing new shows. Just last month, the streaming giant revealed seven new originals they had commissioned from prominent filmmakers in the United Kingdom.
Actors Rowan Atkinson, Andy Serkis, and director Sam Mendes are just some of the big names attached to the new projects set to debut on Netflix sometime in the future.
Atkinson is set to star in Man vs Bee, a new series that he created. The show will revolve around a man battling with a bee as he housesits an opulent mansion.
Serkis, meanwhile, will be the executive producer for the adaptation of Sally Thorne’s Half Bad books. The story will revolve around Nathan, whose life is complicated by having the world’s most feared witch as a parent.
The Red Zone will be a comedy series executive produced by Mendes. The show is described as a football comedy that is not about football.
Netflix is also building up its catalog with shows produced in the United States, as evidenced by its acquisition of the rights to a new television series starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The show is supposed to be an international spy adventure with Schwarzenegger co-starring alongside actress Monica Barbaro.
