There is yet another reason for pop superstars BTS to celebrate as their career has achieved yet another milestone, just days after their Grammy nomination was announced.
Billboard reports that the septet’s latest single, Life Goes On, debuts at the top of this week’s Billboard Hot 100. The feat is historic for a number of reasons, first of all for becoming the first song sung predominantly in Korean to top the chart in 62 years.
It is also the group’s third number-one single after previously topping the charts with their first English single Dynamite and then topping it again with the remix to Savage Love by Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo.
Life Goes On also debuted on top of the Billboard Global 200 chart and the Billboard Global 200 excluding the US. BTS also maintained their top spot on the Billboard Social 50 and also topped the Artist 100 chart.
Aside from Life Goes On, Dynamite also found its way back into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, rocketing back up to number three. Meanwhile, the Billboard Global 200 has Life Goes On, Dynamite, and another BTS track, Blue & Grey, all in the top 10.
Seven songs from their latest album, BE, also debuted within the Billboard Hot 100. Blue & Grey was in 13th place. Stay was in 22nd place, Fly to My Room was in 69th place, Telepathy in 70th place, and Dis-ease in 72nd place.
Forbes also underscored how monumental the feat is by pointing out that the group did not resort to the usual industry gimmicks that are often needed to get a song atop the Billboard Hot 100.
The publication points out that Life Goes On received so little radio play that it practically amounts to nothing. Despite this, the song was able to top the charts on the strength of digital and physical copies sales. Life Goes On sold 20,000 physical copies and 129,000 digital downloads.
Forbes also says that BTS now matches acts like the Bee Gees and the Beatles. Notching three number one songs in the space of three months has not been done since the Bee Gees did it back in 1978. The only other group to do this quicker than BTS are the Beatles, who snatched three number ones in the space of two months and three days.
The chart achievements are just the cherry on top after BTS earned Grammy nominations for their music less than a week ago. The group's single Dynamite is up for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the upcoming Grammy Awards.
