The Crown was received with a slew of criticisms due to its exploitative portrayal of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s relationship.
But there’s one thing that the series and its creator, Peter Morgan, got right. And that is, casting Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher.
According to YOU magazine, Anderson spent hours and hours perfecting her appearance to look a lot like the former British prime minister.
During an interview, she revealed that she wore two different types of wigs throughout all 10 episodes. She also had to wear a fat-suit to make her built more similar to Thatcher.
Anderson also tried wearing prosthetic teeth and putty so that her teeth would look like Thatcher’s. After all, the British PM was known for having a bad set of teeth.
But the American actress eventually realized that wearing false teeth won’t work, so she solely relied on her acting chops.
According to Anderson, she and Thatcher share one similarity, and that’s their being decisive. They also decide on things easily, and they know exactly which direction they’re headed.
But she and Thatcher are more different than similar. When asked if she thinks she would be an effective prime minister, Anderson said she wouldn’t. After all, she tends to forget things easily. She won’t also be diplomatic when dealing with important issues.
Meanwhile, the actress, who currently resides in London, is dating Morgan. But even though she was cast for her partner's role, they reportedly agreed to keep their relationship strictly personal when they’re not on the set of The Crown.
Anderson also said that she and Morgan do not live together. And this arrangement works wonders for them.
Since they’re not always together, they find time to miss each other, which she said has been great for their relationship.
Anderson’s performance in The Crown received praises, and it also sparked predictions that she would bag a major award in next year’s awards shows.
But the same cannot be said about the other actors in the series.
Even though Josh O’ Connor and Emma Corrin were also applauded for their portrayal of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, many people were not pleased with how the royals were depicted.
According to reports, Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, and Prince William are not thrilled with The Crown's new season because it exploits their family’s struggles.
