In what is probably one of the biggest milestones in their career to date, pop superstars BTS have just been nominated for the first time for their music.
Billboard reports that the seven-year-old pop septet became the first K-pop group to be nominated for a main category at the Grammy awards. The group was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance thanks to their chart-topping single, Dynamite.
As pointed out by the publication, the group was actually nominated back in 2019 for Best Recording Package for their album, Love Yourself: Tear. Had they won, the art director HuskyFox would be the one receiving the award and not the group. This new nomination is for the group’s music.
Of course, the BTS members were ecstatic at the news, posting two reaction videos on their Twitter account. As Soompi reported, the video shows band members V, Jungkook, RM, and Jimin anxiously awaiting the nominations to be announced.
Once the members realize that they clinched the nomination, Jungkook, RM, and Jimin spring up and shout in excitement, with V still looking shocked at the news, the group later posted another video of the moment taken from another angle.
BTS also tweeted a more composed message that expressed gratitude towards their loyal fans, the ARMY, as well as to everyone else who related to their music. The group also expressed their gratefulness to the Recording Academy for the nomination.
In an article dissecting the nomination, Forbes contributor Bryan Rolli described Dynamite as a “Trojan Horse” meant to take over the West's music industry. According to Rolli, more credit should be given to the savvy of the group for finally putting out an all-English song such as Dynamite.
Rolli said that the group first started laying the groundwork for Dynamite as soon as they started making it big in the United States. He noted that BTS continuously grew their fanbase, album sales, and their performances so that they had the momentum to reach the top once they released Dynamite.
Whether BTS wins a Grammy or gets to perform at the ceremony will be revealed in January of next year when the award ceremony airs on television. The septet will most likely perform in their country of South Korea, as it does not look like the global coronavirus pandemic is slowing down in the United States.
According to the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention update for Nov. 24, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States is now at 12,333,452 people. Deaths caused by COVID-19 are now at 257,016 people.
