John Cleese seems to have taken an outrageous turn on social media. Yes, the Monty Python star, popularly known for his decisions on the comedy series and movies, has now questioned transgender rights.
The 81-year-old actor provoked Twitter users and trans advocates over the weekend while he also defended J.K. Rowling. This year, the actor had received major backlash for supporting the Harry Potter author, who doesn't have positive views on the transgender community.
Cleese had signed a letter for the author, who kept defending herself but remained under the fire throughout the year. The new tweet was by the Monty Python's Big Red Book author joked about the trans and said that he wants to become a "Cambodian policewoman."
He further asked if that is allowed, or maybe he is too "unrealistic." Cleese wrote this in response to a Twitter user who replied to the actor's previous tweet asking why he can't let others be whoever they want to be.
The user further claimed that either it is a deep conspiracy, or maybe he like Rowling so much that she can't do anything wrong in his eyes. Cleese wrote that he is not interested in the trans people while he is glad that they are happy.
Cleese also noted that other people are treating trans people kindly, which is great. However, he revealed that his focus is on America's democracy as he feels it is under threat. Moreover, he said that his priorities are police brutality's revelations, UK corruption, and the appalling British Press.
The actor was not the only one who supported Rowling in September. There were 58 signatures on the letter that defended Rowling in The Sunday Times against the cancel culture. Rowling quit social media for a brief time, but later she started tweeting again to elaborate her views.
Rowling shared a blog link of her own website explaining why she spoke about the gender issues. However, throughout the critical tweets on Rowling and her supporters, Cleese continued to tweet his point of view on the trans.
In one of the tweets, he explained why it is unfair for a man who became a woman and now competing against another woman who was born a woman. Charlotte Clymer responded to the actor and explained that trans people are not treated kindly. The 34-year-old activist further said that it is important to consider all genders equal when it comes to health care, housing, and employment.
