Queen Elizabeth allegedly tried ending her marriage to Prince Philip at least 63 times.
The royal couple, who will be celebrating their 73rd wedding anniversary on November 20, don’t have the perfect marriage.
In fact, a new documentary recently revealed that the queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s marriage took a turn for the worse in the 1950s.
And by 1956, the couple faced a marriage crisis that almost ended in a divorce. According to sources, Prince Philip’s bachelor lifestyle didn’t sit well with the queen.
Additionally, the Duke of Edinburgh’s infidelity also caused tension in his marriage.
Even though there hasn’t been any confirmation that Prince Philip had an affair. royal author Sarah Bradford insisted that he did. In her book, he said that Prince Philip cheated on his wife more than once.
However, royal expert Ingrid Seward debunked Bradford’s claims by saying that there’s no proof to support the cheating allegations.
In the Netflix series The Crown, Prince Philip was depicted as a cheating husband to his ever-loyal wife. In one of the scenes from Season 2, the queen’s equerry informs her about Prince Philip’s possible affair.
The queen also seemed uncomfortable every time Prince Philip would hang out with his friends because he would always come home late and drunk.
However, it is important to note that The Crown is a work of fiction.
The Sun previously compiled a list of names that Prince Philip was linked to. The publication claimed that Prince Philip had an affair with showgirl Pat Kirkwood in 1948 while the queen was pregnant with Prince Charles.
But in 2007, a letter between Prince Philip and Kirkwood following the latter’s demise revealed that their alleged affair was just a rumor.
In 1956, Prince Philip went on a tour on the Royal Yacht Britannia, and he was supposed to come home in February. And when he didn’t, rumors swirled that the royal couple was having marital problems.
The queen was forced to release a statement denying the rumors. And she visited her husband shortly after.
Prince Philip was also linked to Lady Penelope Brabourne. She has been the Duke of Edinburgh’s partner in carriage driving competitions since 1994.
In an attempt to show that she was not bothered by the rumors, the queen decided to invite Brabourne to various events and occasions.
Sacha, the Duchess of Abercorn said that the monarch gave Prince Philip a lot of leeway after her late father, King George VI reminded her that her husband is a sailor so he comes in on the tide.
