President-elect Joe Biden is wasting no time moving towards the direction to minimize the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the people, businesses, and overall economy of the United States. Taking a major step in that direction, he has selected the key members that will be spearheading his coronavirus taskforce, including the previously fired surgeon general.
During his Florida rally, Trump told his supporters that he might fire Dr. Anthony Fauci after the election, intensifying his feud with the nation's leading expert on infectious diseases, while hinting at a potential administration purge after the Nov. 3 election, CNN reported earlier this month. While addressing the crowd, Trump began complaining about how the media covered the COVID-19 outbreak, and the crowd began a "Fire Fauci" chant.
Trump said he appreciated their advice and suggested he may wait a little bit after the election before firing Fauci. Biden is expected to name Vivek Murthy as one of the co-chairs along with former FDA (Food and Drug Administration) commissioner David Kessler, his deputy campaign manager, and Kate Bedingfield told NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday.
Aside from them, the task force will be graced by Yale University’s Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, CNN reported on Saturday. The rest of the task members will be announced on Monday, with Bedingfield confirming that the work has already started. Referencing the election result, she said people are waiting for a change with bated breath and want the United States to move forward.
She went on to confirm that Biden will start transition work this week. He will be making calls, making announcements to the restlessly waiting American people, regarding how he plans to live up to the promises he made during his campaigns. Murthy, who was touted as America's top doctor when Biden was serving as the vice president under President Barack Obama, had been named for a four-year term as surgeon general by the former president in 2014.
Born in the UK to Indian immigrants, Murthy was forced by Trump to resign in Apr. 2016, The Hill reported. President George H.W. Bush had appointed Kessler as FDA commissioner, and he continued serving in the position through President Bill Clinton’s first presidency. Bedingfield said the pair has been advising Biden and his campaign since the pandemic began in Mar. This year, and even confirmed their new appointments.
