President Donald Trump doesn't shy away from exhibiting his achievements or everything he has done for the United States and its citizens. Living up to his reputation, the president once told a released prisoner that former President Barack Obama failed to make sure that he got all the credit for her release.
An American aid worker, Aya Hijazi, who was imprisoned in Egypt, revealed that Trump demanded she gives him credit for her safe return to the United States, adding that the people deserve a better leader. Hijazi, who is a US-Egypt citizen, served as an aid worker and is the founder of a program for kids in Egypt.
According to Huffington Post, she was kept in prison by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi's government in 2014 for three years on unconfirmed charges of human trafficking and child abuse. Amid country-wide violent repression on protests against the government, non-governmental organizations and human-rights groups challenged those dubious claims against Hijazi.
The country's court eventually found that she wasn't guilty and released her in Apr. 2017. Hijazi revealed that she was taken to meet Trump as soon as she returned to the U.S., noting that his remarks in private shocked her.
About 48 hours after being released, the administration pushed Hijazi for a meeting with the president, and as expected, the event was publicized by the media. However, privately, she said Trump leaned over to remind her that he and his administration released her after they picked up from where the former president failed.
She told Business Insider that after the remark, she was torn and highly disappointed. She went on to say that although she was grateful that he released him, she didn't want to meet Trump and was forced to appear for the meeting, and had no choice of words in that situation.
Moreover, she argued the president's assertion, claiming that her release might have been made possible after senior White House officials and a bipartisan group of US lawmakers advocated on her behalf during Obama's presidency. She felt it was unfair for Trump to claim all the credit.
On Nov. 3, Hijazi took to her Twitter account to share a picture of the meeting with Trump at the White House following her return to America, noting that the meeting was never about her, just like it was never about Americans. She wrote the whole event was about Trump's ego before noting that Americans deserve a better president than Trump.
